SUMMARY:Decoder 2017: The Ticket That Exploded
DESCRIPTION:Mallory Catlett / Restless NYC\nDecoder 2017: The Ticket That Exploded\nIn parternership with The Chocolate Factory Theater\nSaturday\, July 8\, 2017 / 8:00 pm / Tickets $15 / Preview \nDecoder 2017 is a three-part concert series exploring the language and prophecies of William S. Burroughs on the merging of body\, media\, and machine. This interactive performance is generated live by cassette-tape DJ and sound artist G Lucas Crane and performer Jim Findlay\, who act as both fictional characters and real-time systems operators. Together they create a cut-up of internet trash\, cinematic dreamscapes\, and obscene routines that expose our complicity in the systems that control us. \nCreator/ director Mallory Catlett began Restless NYC to reconstruct canonical literary and theatrical works into performances that engage the past in a dialogue about its life in the present. In 2014 This Was the End\, her remix of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya\, won Obie\, Bessie\, and Henry Hewes Awards. In 2015 Catlett received a Foundation for Contemporary Arts grant. Decoder 2017 is based on Burroughs’ Nova Trilogy and part of M/F Future\, a project about how we imagine what we’ll become.

SUMMARY:Mary Gauthier in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Saturday May 6\, 2017 – 7pm\nMary Gauthier has become one of Americana music’s most admired artists—across the U.S. and in her regular tours around the world.” – The Wall Street Journal \n“…her razor-sharp eye for detail and her commitment to unsentimental self-reflection puts her in a class with greats such as Kris Kristofferson\, John Prine and yes\, Bob Dylan.” – The Los Angeles Times \nWhat do Alabama Shakes\, Mumford & Sons\, and Mary Gauthier have in common? They are all prior winners of the Americana Music Association’s New/Emerging Artist of the Year award. Mary took home that award in 2005. \nThe Associated Press calls Mary Gauthier one of the best songwriters of her generation. Drag Queens in Limousines\, off of Gauthier’s second CD of the same name\, won best Folk/Singer-Songwriter Song at the first Annual Independent Music Awards in 1999. Her third album\, 2002’s Filth and Fire\, was named #1 Best Independent CD of the year by Jon Pareles of the New York Times.  Her 2005 release\, Mercy Now\, was named in the top five records of the decade by No Depression magazine. \nHer most recent release\, Trouble And Love\, was included in  Rolling Stone’s feature “The 26 Albums of 2014 You Probably Didn’t But Really Should Hear\, where they said of it: \n “Every tune is a rough gem of melody\, misery and economy\, as Gauthier excavates romantic wreckage like an archaeologist telling the story of a fossilized love.” \nMary Gauthier put it well when she once said\, “There’s no such thing as going too deep.” \nThe Empire State Railway Museum is located at 70 Lower High Street in Phoenicia\, New York. SUMMARY:Carrie Elkin w/Danny Schmidt in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Flying Cat Music Presents: \nCarrie Elkin w/Danny Schmidt in concert Saturday April 15th\n“Carrie Elkin’s songs are\, at once\, intimate yet universal\, naked yet richly adorned. Her voice is simply revelatory” FolkWax \n“an earthy combination of strength and compassion . . . reminiscent of the winsome beauty created by a young Nanci Griffith” Austin Chronicle \n“Very few people in this world can captivate an audience with just a voice and a guitar the way Carrie Elkin can.” Athens Music Network \n“Carrie’s songs trade in gorgeous introspection punctuated by insistent joy. Her music is heartening\, unafraid\, unwilling to let life’s twists and turns pull her down. It gives us strength for the road ahead.” Austin Songwriter \n“I’m thinking Patty Griffin\, Nanci Griffith and Iris DeMent….spellbinding from the opening track” Bob Harris\, BBC Radio \n“I have never seen a performer so in love with the act of singing. That’s the gospel truth\, and from what I’ve subsequently learned I’m not the only one to believe or state that. Onstage Elkin was simply a force of nature….” Maverick Magazine \nCarrie comes to Phoenicia on her tour to celebrate the April 7th release of her exquisite new solo CD\, The Penny Collector. Though still in pre-release\, it is already garnering strong reviews such as this one from the UK’s Folking.com: \n“With her latest work\, Carrie Elkin once again delivers the powerhouse vocal performance that people have come to expect\, with delicate waves of intimacy that build to astonishing crashes of intensity” \nCarrie is joined on this tour by the most special of guests\, her husband and musical partner Danny Schmidt\, whose solo work also has long been highly acclaimed. In July 2010\, Chicago Tribune music reviewer Rich Warren declared Schmidt “one of the 50 most significant singer-songwriters of folk in the last 50 years”. Carrie and Danny\, not surprisingly\, often appear on each other’s solo recordings – frequently appearing on stages together as well. While the focus this night will rest on Carrie Elkin\, audiences will have ample time to appreciate Danny Schmidt’s fine work as well. \nThe Empire State Railway Museum is located at 70 Lower High Street in Phoenicia\, New York. Tickets are $15 at the door or $13 with an advance RSVP. Show time is 7:30 p.m. and the doors open at 7:00 p.m. This is an intimate venue with seating for approximately 50 guests. \nSeats can be reserved by emailing us at flyingcatmusic@gmail.com or by calling Flying Cat Music at 845-688-9453. SUMMARY:THIS by Adrienne Truscott
DESCRIPTION:THIS by Adrienne Truscott\nDirected by Ellie Heyman \nA Watershed Lab project in partnership with New York Live Arts \nSaturday\, March 25 8:00pm / Tickets $15 \nTHIS is a solo performance which may not always be a solo. \nTHIS is a small or large or medium act of artistic survivalism and an ever-evolving work that writes\, in real time\, the libretto of the performance the artist is attempting to do which changes with each performance to reflect the new context brought by the performance at hand. \nAfter taking on rape culture in her controversial\, award-winning stand-up performance Asking for It\, Adrienne Truscott comes to Mount Tremper Arts to wrestle with questions that have formed the undercurrent of her performance work forever. In a new solo\, she asks what it is we are all doing in this place\, at this moment in time. And as she says: she’s interested in the possibility of failure as a mandate for rigor. \nAdrienne Truscott has been making genre-straddling work in New York City and abroad for over 15 years. She is a choreographer\, comedian\, writer\, and one half of the boundary-busting cabaret act The Wau Wau Sisters. \nFor tickets and info: http://mounttremperarts.org/ \nMount Tremper Arts\n647 South Plank Rd\, Mt Tremper NY 12457\n845-688-9893

SUMMARY:Esopus Dreams: How New York City Reshaped the Catskills
DESCRIPTION:Join author Diane Galusha for an illustrated presentation of why and how New York City turned to the Catskills for water after it tapped most of the rivers and streams in Westchester and Putnam Counties in the last half of the 19th century. Between 1905 and 1915\, surveyors\, engineers and contractors captured this free flowing stream behind a dam at Olivebridge\, and then sent it down a 92-mile- long concrete tube to deliver water to the nation’s biggest city. Galusha\, author of Liquid Assets: A History of New York City’s Water System\, will recount the amazing tale of the building of the Ashokan Reservoir\, a story of triumphant engineering and the tragic displacement of more than 2\,000 people who lived in a dozen communities along the Esopus that were sacrificed or relocated for the Ashokan project. Copies of Liquid Assets\, now with a 50-page update\, will be available for purchase.
