SUMMARY:Guarding the Water: World War I and the Catskill Water Supply
DESCRIPTION:Guarding the Water: World War I and the Catskill Water Supply  presented by Diane Galusha \nJuly 21\, 2019 2-4p.m.\nEmpire State Railway Museum\n70 Lower High Street\, Phoenicia\, NY 12464 \nFree to public with request for small donation to help defray out cost. \nOne hundred years ago\, New Yorkers celebrated the conclusion of the “war to end all wars” when the Treaty of Versailles was signed June 28\, 1919\, formally ending World War I. They could finally breathe a sigh of relief that the delivery of Catskill Mountain water from the Ashokan Reservoir via the Catskill Aqueduct was no longer threatened by potential German saboteurs Ms. Galushais a local historian and author and will describe the efforts to patrol the 92-mile long underground aqueduct\, and other impacts of the war on the brand new Catskill Water System. In addition to the little-told story of how the aqueduct was protected\, Diane will discuss the war’s effects on BWS staffing and contractor operations. Through original letters and the personal stories of workers who became soldiers\, the program will highlight the individual costs of war set against the monumental effort to provide water to millions.
