Workshop participants will enjoy a 3-night stay at the Emerson\, with the third night free.  Room rates start at $540 (inclusive of tax and resort fee) and workshop rates are $250 – $350 (excluding supplies).  Each workshop is designed for all skill levels and those interested in registering for the workshop only are also welcome. \nAbout the Artist/Workshops:  \nKaren O’Neil’s passion for painting light and color began as an art student.  After earning a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art\, O’Neil studied in Provincetown with Henry Hensche\, winner of the Pulitzer Traveling Prize and Halgarten Award\, which kindled her career as an unparalleled colorist.  Artist residencies at Millay and Woodstock School of Art followed\, as well as teaching at the Art Students League of NY.  O’Neil’s work is represented in numerous private and corporate collections worldwide and has been featured in many print publications and blogs including The Artists Magazine and The Jealous Curator.  Working outdoors on site\, the Light on the Esopus Creek workshop focuses on scale\, editing\, and blocking form to record the luminous and changing light of the Catskills.  Working quickly\, students will be encouraged to start paintings at different times of day\, and as light changes.   \nFor reservations and/or more information contact the Emerson Resort & Spa Reservations department at (845) 688-2828\, option 0.

After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Oklahoma City University\, Goetz furthered her studies at the Malden Bridge School of Art; Cape School of Art in Provincetown\, MA; and The New York Academy of Art. For four decades Goetz has painted her environs (Oklahoma\, New York City\, Cape Cod and Woodstock) with a heavily impastoed technique in an impressionist/tonalist style.  Goetz’s work is held in numerous corporate and private collections including: Union Pacific\, the Union League Club\, NYC\, White and Case and the Professional Golf Association (PGA).  Her paintings have been exhibited in solo exhibitions at galleries throughout the country including Grand Central Art Galleries\, New York\, Newman Galleries\, Philadelphia\, the James Cox Gallery at Woodstock\, and Howell Gallery\, Oklahoma City.  Goetz maintains an active teaching schedule and has served on the faculty of the Woodstock School of Art. \nCreekside Painting in the Catskills\, Plein Air Workshop. Students will have the opportunity to capture the serene beauty of the Esopus Creek\, as it winds along the Emerson Resort & Spa. The workshop will begin with a morning demonstration by instructor Mary Anna Goetz. This session will guide the class through Goetz’s process…beginning with a grisaille\, or value painting\, followed by application of color.  Students will then begin creating their own compositions\, based on Goetz’s plein air approach. She began exhibiting and selling her work in New York City in the late 1980s\, and started painting her atmospheric\, minimalist landscapes just before moving to the Catskills from New York City in 1990. Scheele’s work can be found nationally and internationally in hundreds of private\, corporate\, and museum collections\, and has been featured in numerous articles\, profiles\, and reviews. \nAs a teaching artist for the past 20 years in Woodstock\, Provincetown\, and Nantucket\, Scheele is pleased to offer a workshop focusing on imagery of her home turf\, Painting the Catskill Mountains\, Streams and Reservoirs.  Students will be instructed on both narrative and abstract aspects of painting our beautiful mountains\, lakes\, and streams. Using photographic reference or views from the Emerson grounds\, emphasis will be on color and composition\, bringing together elements that coalesce to create paintings that have a strong emotive and formal presence.
