Shandaken Studio Tour & “Whole Arts Catalog”

Shandaken Studio Tour re-enters the 2016 Catskill atmosphere like a meteor with a new free guidebook: the “Whole Arts Catalog”. Over 30 artists open their studos, surrounded by a solar system of artistic venues including world music at the Phoenicia Festival of the Voice, modern dance residences at Mount Tremper Arts, STS Playhouse live theater, star-studded performances at the Belleayre Music Festival and Flying Cat Concerts at the Empire State Railway Museum. The legendary Arts Upstairs Gallery in Phoenicia is joined by two new art spaces in Pine Hill: The Old Garage Gallery on Academy Street and Geoff Rogers Gallery on Main Street. See outdoor sculptures at 49A Art Park in front of the Galli-Curci mansion in Highmount, 15 new sculptures at the Catskill Interpretive Center (or “CIC”, or as I like to say, “See-Eye-See”) in Mount Tremper, and huge ingenious indigenous totemic monuments at Emile Brunel Park in Boiceville. There’s a large steel tomato at Migliorelli’s farmstand. See art work at the Emerson Resort & Spa and at Ulster Savings Bank. Do art at the Phoenicia Library. Art is all over the place! The global guidebook creates a gravitational pull that draws you into the “Whole Arts” orbit of Shandaken through an entire solar cycle.

Steve Heller’s retro-rocket space-age studio is open, and his 50s era robot dominates Goods restaurant. Dave Channon’s Statue of Liberty illuminates the CIC. There are new artists on the tour. Anne Stanner’s concrete “Adam & Eve” remind us what a Garden of Eden we live in. Portraitist Dana Fraser has a new studio/shop in Phoenicia called “Ta-Da”. Diana Hartel paints abstract expressionist abstracts and landscapes. Mark Loete has a photo show of poster-size trout flies at Amy’s Take-Away gourmet eatery in Lanesville. Christina Varga has paintings of roosters amid live scratching chickens at her farmstead studio. Manhee Bak curates an international spectrum of artists at the Old Garage Gallery. Rita Schwab’s art occupies Dave Channon’s barn.

The all-free tour kicks off with “Short Tall Tales”, an open-mouth storytelling performance with host MC Sparrow on Friday July 15, 7-10 pm. There’s a gala pot-luck reception on the 16th 6-9 pm. Both are at The Arts Upstairs 60 Main St. in Phoenicia. Open studio tour hours are July 16 and 17, 10 am to 5 pm, but pick up the free stylish Whole Arts Catalog and keep it on your coffee table. Go to shows, events, concerts, and visit artist studios all year round, all over Shandaken. A real treat no matter what the weather. Pick up your Whole Arts Catalog at Phoenicia Diner, Graham & Co, Sweet Sue’s, and other fine locations around Shandaken, Woodstock and Kingston. Preview the Whole Arts catalog online at www.ShandakenArt.com or email info@ShandakenArt.com for information. Or call 845-688-2977. See you on the tour… and at the next show!
